Recovering ruthenium, especially from industrial catalysts and electronic waste, involves several steps to isolate and refine this rare metal. Here’s a general overview of ruthenium recovery processes:

1. Chemical Extraction

  • Aqua Regia Leaching: One common technique is to dissolve ruthenium-bearing material in aqua regia, a mixture of nitric and hydrochloric acids. This process helps to separate ruthenium from other metals, particularly platinum group metals (PGMs).
  • Chlorination: Chlorine gas is often introduced to form ruthenium tetroxide (RuO₄), a volatile compound that separates ruthenium from other components. This can then be reduced to recover ruthenium metal.

2. Electrochemical Recovery

  • In electrolytic methods, ruthenium-containing solutions can be passed through an electrolytic cell to deposit ruthenium onto a cathode, isolating it from impurities in the solution.
  • This method is particularly useful when recovering ruthenium from spent catalysts, where it often coexists with other metals.

3. Thermal Reduction Techniques

  • High-temperature treatments can reduce ruthenium oxides to the metallic form, usually by using a reducing agent like hydrogen. Thermal reduction may also be performed after ruthenium is isolated in oxide form to yield pure ruthenium.

4. Solvent Extraction

  • Ruthenium compounds in solution can be selectively separated using specific solvents. This method works well in refining ruthenium from other PGMs since ruthenium’s unique chemistry allows selective dissolution and extraction.

5. Ion Exchange

  • Using ion-exchange resins helps separate ruthenium from mixed-metal solutions. Specific resins can target ruthenium ions, allowing for more selective recovery.

Each of these techniques can be adapted depending on the concentration and type of ruthenium-bearing materials available. Additionally, environmental considerations are increasingly essential when choosing a recovery method, as some processes release hazardous chemicals or gases, which may require further containment and disposal procedures.
